NHRA legends to highlight 6th-annual Don Schumacher Racing open house

August 24

In keeping with the celebration of the National Hot Rod Association’s 60th anniversary season, Don Schumacher Racing will host a group of drag racing icons at the sixth-annual DSR Open House to benefit Riley Hospital for Children.

“Big Daddy” Don Garlits, who in 2001 was voted the NHRA’s greatest driver, highlights a group of legends scheduled to join DSR’s current stable of seven drivers Sept. 2nd at the mega-team’s race shop.

Garlits, an eight-time U.S. Nationals Top Fuel winner, will be joined by drag racing superstars Shirley Muldowney, a three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion; 10-time Pro Stock champion Bob Glidden, a Hoosier native; six-time U.S. Nationals winner Ed “the Ace” McCulloch; pioneer Chris “the Greek” Karamesines, and DSR team-owner and 1970 U.S. Nationals Funny Car winner Don Schumacher.

“It’s great that the fans that come to the open house will have the opportunity to meet so many of the great names of the sport both past and present,” Schumacher said. “We’re celebrating NHRA’s 60th anniversary so it’s only fitting to have this historic roster of drivers here.

“With all these legendary names, there’s something like 30 U.S. Nationals victories combined – that’s an impressive statistic. This will be a can’t-miss event before we begin qualifying for the U.S. Nationals, and it’s for a terrific cause.”

The legends will join the seven DSR drivers – Tony Schumacher, Antron Brown, Spencer Massey, Ron Capps, Matt Hagan, Jack Beckman and Johnny Gray – for an autograph session beginning at noon in the DSR shop.

In addition, the DSR Open House will feature the Indy Hi-Winders Car Club Car and Motorcycle Show, a nostalgia cacklefest, and both live and silent auctions with all proceeds going to Riley. DSR has generated more than $130,000 for Riley from its Open House and Bowling for Riley events.
