DSR Sonoma Qualifying Highlights:

  • Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Ron Capps (Funny Car) ran ‘best of session’ during both of Saturday’s qualifying rounds, collecting six bonus points each
  • All DSR entries qualify in the ‘top half’ of their fields and will start race day with the advantage of lane choice
  • Leah Pritchett and Jack Beckman also earn bonus points on Saturday

Qualified: No. 3 (lane choice)

"We just tried to back it down again and we just need to back it down a little more tomorrow. We're staying aggressive. I'm just proud of our Matco Tools/U.S. Army/Toyota guys. We're in our best qualifying position in a while, so we're going to go into race day tomorrow and keep on pushing. I'm really happy. It's good to be here at the Toyota Sonoma Nationals and we're going to see what we can make happen on race day. All we need to do is back it down and slow it down and everything's going to be just fine."

"We definitely have a lot of confidence going into race day. The conditions during Q3 were as close to what we’re going to get in round one tomorrow. Feeling good, we’re not going to let that mishap from Q4 slow us down. We’ve got great parts and pieces from Schumacher and Mopar to keep this Palomar Builders machine rocking for what will hopefully be a real long Sunday. There were challenges up on the mountain that we overcame, and there’s challenges here at sea-level that we’re also going to overcome. We look back to where we were at a couple of races ago to where we’re at right now on the swing, and we’re just doing everything we can to keep that momentum going."

“I was already buckled in and asked (crew chief) Mike (Neff) what to expect – the driver always wants to know what the team is trying to do – and he said the conditions are the same and it’s going to run the same. And it did. The mph was a little lower for some reason but it ran exactly what we wanted. A great run for the Army car. Mike and Phil (Shuler) have a good handle on it. The sun’s going to be out tomorrow and the conditions are going to be similar so I think we have a good chance.”

Funny Car:

"We’ve got our race car back, no question. We pushed it a little hard in Q3 and that’s okay because we knew what it would do. We’re moving weight around in the car, it’s making the balance better. When we push hard at night, this Mopar Dodge goes right down the race track. Love working for the Infinite Hero group and I want to see them all in the winner’s circle tomorrow."

The Results:

"Don Schumacher gives us the best equipment. I love to see him smile. Bart Riebe, Riebe’s Auto, all of our NAPA people and just the fans, man, there’s nothing like doing a burnout and looking up there and seeing the grandstands packed. This is my home track and our fans are the best in the world. They have such passion and it makes you so happy to make a run like that. Halftrack on, that thing was a handful. I just wanted to get it on down through there for Don (Schumacher) and for (crew chief Rahn) Tobler, Pennzoil, USA Compression and those guys, and we’ll see what happens tomorrow."

Qualified: No. 4 (lane choice)

"Finished up qualifying sitting No. 4. We have a pretty decent race car. We had a good lap last night but you know, race day is always different, that’s why we love getting up in the morning on Sunday, you never know what’s going to happen. I think the biggest thing that we can do is take our first run today that we made in the heat and work off of that. We ran well in the heat so we definitely have some confidence there. This Mopar Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat body has been great. It’s the lightest body we’ve had. We’re almost 10-15 pounds lighter than we’ve ever been; the drivability is great. Hopefully we can push hard tomorrow and turn four win lights on. Looking forward to winning my first Sonoma race."

“Q4 was actually a much better run than that 4.14. It had an issue there on the top end, but this Make-A-Wish Foundation Dodge is a good, strong race car. We ran in the threes (second zone) during qualifying. We had a good car during both runs today in the heat so I think it’ll be a good day tomorrow.”
